The class Chondrichthyes (about 1, species) is a morphologically diverse clade, consisting of subclass Elasmobranchii (sharks [Figure ], rays, and skates, together with the obscure and critically endangered sawfishes), and a few dozen species of fishes called chimaeras, or “ghost sharks” in the subclass Holocephali.

Lungfish definition is - any of an order (Dipnoi) of bony fishes that breathe by a modified swim bladder as well as gills. The hagfishes comprise a uniform group of some 60 species inhabiting the cool or deep parts of the oceans of both hemispheres. They are considered the most primitive representatives of the group of craniate chordates, which - apart from the hagfishes that show no traces of verte brae -includes all vertebrate animals.

Biology of Parrotfishes - CRC Press Book Parrotfish are found on almost every coral reef in the world. This ubiquity and uniqueness of their feeding action make them one of the most important groups of fishes within coral reef ecosystems. This book on ancient fishes unites the work of many specialists coming from different areas of biology. Hagfishes, lungfishes, Chondrosteans, and Holosteans constitute the main subject of study. Fossil records and extant species are compared to establish the conservation or the degeneration of speci.

Lungfish are freshwater rhipidistian fish belonging to the subclass sh are best known for retaining characteristics primitive within the Osteichthyes, including the ability to breathe air, and structures primitive within Sarcopterygii, including the presence of lobed fins with a well-developed internal skeleton.

Today there are only six known species of lungfish, living only in Clade: Dipnomorpha, Ahlberg,   The Third Edition of Biology of Fishes is chiefly about fish as remarkably efficient machines for coping with the many problems that life in water entails, and looks at many such special cases.

Fishes form the largest group of vertebrates, with aro known species, and they display a remarkable diversity of size, shape, internal structure and ecology to cope 3/5(1). Phylogeny, Anatomy and Physiology of Ancient Fishes - Ebook written by Giacomo Zaccone, Konrad Dabrowski, Michael S.
